At Scikoop, we use artificial intelligence. We use it to measure representativeness and to help science reflect the people it claims to serve. We chose to build with AI, and that choice comes with obligations.
AI is not neutral. It is being built and deployed right now to target and kill in war. It is trained and run with a disregard for water, energy and the land they come from. It is sold as a way to eliminate the jobs of the people who do the work. And it concentrates unprecedented wealth and power in very few hands. We reject all of these uses. They are not the inevitable price of progress. They are choices, and we refuse to make them or to profit from them.
Our commitments
Purpose
We use AI only where it serves research that is more rigorous, fairer and more representative. We will not work with clients or partners whose purpose is military, surveillance or repression.
Data
Our analyses run locally, and no highly sensitive data reaches our servers. We never sell data, and we never use it to train models without explicit consent.
Human judgment
AI informs our work but never decides in our place. We design and validate our methods. We remain concerned about what our tools produce.
Work
AI supports our team and our partners' teams. We will never use it as a pretext to eliminate jobs.
Restraint
We use the smallest tool that does the job, and we will measure and publish our AI footprint.
Clear-eyed choices
We depend on models built by others, whose choices we don't always share. We choose our providers based on these criteria and on our means, and we review those choices every year.
Accountability
As a B Corp, we will report publicly each year on our AI use against these commitments. If we fall short, we will say so.
These commitments build on the Montréal Declaration for a Responsible Development of Artificial Intelligence, which Scikoop has signed. The Declaration sets the principles; this text says how we apply them.
We believe AI can serve knowledge, justice and the common good. That future will not happen on its own.
